Club History

"Seán Dolan was a man of ideals and principles and he was prepared to suffer for those ideals he held in high honour"

Seán Dolan was a renowned playwright, scholar, musician and linguist who in 1939 was arrested for his part in the fight for Irish freedom and was interned on the prison ship "Al Rawdah" before being transferred to Crumlin Road jail in Belfast.

14 months behind bars lead to a breakdown in health and he was unconditionally released to the confines of his bed in the Waterside area of Derry City and subsequently to the local hospital where he died on 25th October 1941, aged only 28. The following year Seán Dolans GAC was founded in his honour and is currently located in the Creggan area of Derry City.

Since then, Seán Dolans GAC has set its own principles and ideals to provide a sporting, cultural but perhaps most importantly a community outlet for the people of Creggan. These efforts were recognised in 2000 with the award of All-Ireland Club of the Year - the first junior club to do so - and two years later in 2002, we were also recognised locally as Derry GAA Club of the Year.

On the field, our senior team achieved an unprecedented treble winning season in 2009 before an arson attack brought our clubhouse to the ground in 2011. Rebuilding from scratch we opened our new pitch and changing rooms in 2016 before our clubhouse and state of the art indoor training facility was delivered in 2023. Whilst we have a broad history we are keen to rewrite a new one and would welcome you to help us do that.
